iHeartRadio for Windows Phone 8 was released in error, not quite ready yet

iHeartRadioWe recently covered the disappearance of iHeartRadio from the Windows Phone 8 Store. The app was suddenly pulled from listing, but remains available for those running Windows Phone 7.x. We found this to be slightly odd, but believed an updated version would be in the pipeline.

After contacting iHeartRadio, turns out our assumptions were correct:

"The iHeartRadio application was released to the Windows Phone 8 markeplace in error. It hasn't yet been tested for compatibly with the Windows 8 phones. We will keep you updated when an iHeartRadio application for Windows 8 phones is released."

There you have it, folks. iHeartRadio was released for Windows Phone 8 in error (fancy the chances of that, eh?). This may explain why some users were experiencing issues. We'll await further details from the team as to when we can all expect to see the app return to the store for those with latest Windows Phone hardware.

If you're running Windows Phone 7, you're in luck as the app is still available for your smartphone. Should you be packing the latest devices from the manufacturers, we'll have to wait until iHeartRadio is comfortable with the app and release it once again.

Windows Phone 7.8 update scheduled for January 31st

We haven’t heard about the Windows Phone 7.8 update in a while. Last time we talked about it we were disappointed to report it wouldn’t arrive until 2013. It is now almost a month into 2013 and we finally have some more news on 7.8.

According to Windows Phone Columbia’s Facebook page the 7.8 update will be arriving on January 31st. They say that “some terminals” will get it on the 31st, while others will have to wait until later in Q1. This likely means that Nokia handsets will receive the update first. 7.8 includes the new Start screen, more accent colors, new lockscreen, and some other WP8 features. A lot of people have been waiting for this update. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Windows Phone can now download apps and updates larger than 20MB on cellular networks

One feature in Windows Phone that has a lot of supporters and haters is the limit on app size that can be downloaded over cellular. Previously any app or app update that measured over 20MB had to be downloaded over WiFi. This was great for those that don’t want to go over their data limit, but a nuisance for anyone else. Thankfully Microsoft has upped the limit to 50MB. This goes for both Windows Phone 7 and 8.

We’re glad Microsoft has moved the limit up a few notches, but we’d still prefer an option in the settings. For those that have unlimited data plans there really is no need to have this limit. Anyone out there annoyed by this?

Telstra Windows Phone 7.8 update table heightens hope for a Q1 release

Windows Phone 7.8We began to get rather hopeful with news of an imminent release for the Windows Phone 7.8 update, thanks to a tweet published by UK mobile operator O2. The company has quickly become the premier Windows Phone carrier in the UK, supporting the platform with stock of not only Lumia handsets, but Samsung and HTC as well.

Now Telstra has provided some hints that consumers with Windows Phone 7 hardware won't have to wait too long for the much anticipated update.

If the Australian operator's update tables are anything to go by, Windows Phone 7.8 will be hitting consumers from January 31st onwards. The expected date of arrival is for Lumia 800 handsets, while other Windows Phones are subject to availability - approval and deployment dates have not yet been locked down by Telstra. See all supported Windows Phones below:

Should other mobile operators in multiple markets follow a similar release strategy, we'll expect to see the rollout commence completely by March. That's if the above dates hold out, of course. We'll keep an eye out for more information surrounding the update, but it's definitely not long to go now.

T-Mobile Lumia 810 recieving the Portico update today too

The T-Mobile Lumia 810 may not be the most popular device (we liked it), but that doesn’t mean it is getting left behind with updates. Today the 810 is recieving the Portico update that bumps the OS to build 10211. This is the same update that the HTC 8X for AT&T is reciving today as well.

Portico brings several new little features to Windows Phone 8. WiFi can now be forced to stay on even when the screen times out. This can save a little bit of data for those on tight data plans. Portico also adds a couple new SMS related features. Calls can be rejected with an SMS message, SMS can be mutli-selected, and you can save drafts in SMS as well. The update process is fairly straight forward. Just make sure you have a good charge and sit back and let the update do its thing. Check Settings>Phone Update to see if it is ready on your device.

AT&T HTC 8X receiving Windows Phone 8 Portico update now

The international HTC 8X received the Windows Phone 8 Portico update over a month ago, but today it’s time for the AT&T 8X to get some love. Just a few minutes ago we were checking our AT&T 8X for an update and we were surprised to see that one was ready to be installed. The release notes match up with the update that the international version of the 8X received last month. The 8X is now on software build 10211. This also marks the first OTA update for AT&T.

Portico adds several new little features to Windows Phone 8. Users can now choose to keep WiFi on even when the screen times out (WiFi>Advanced). There is also the ability to reject a phone call with a SMS message, save SMS drafts, and select all in SMS. Read more about Portico here. The update downloaded quickly for us, then the phone rebooted to a screen with moving gears. After that the phone migrated data, which was the longest step in the process, and then we were done. The whole OTA process worked seamlessly. Check your AT&T 8X now for the update.

Gorgeous TVShow for Windows Phone 8 updated with Lockscreen support and more

TVShow for Windows Phone 8 LeadOne of our favorite apps on Windows Phone is TVShow by developer Rudy Huyn (Dan especially loves this one). It last received a fairly big update in early-December when it made the jump to Windows Phone 8. That update at the time was mostly to get doublewide Tile support and improved graphics. Today it TVShow gets a proper update bringing functionality unique to Windows Phone 8.

Read on, crouton.

Windows Phone 8 has some unique features that other mobile operating systems like iOS and Android can’t really replicate. Things like allowing apps to change the lockscreen and deep pinning parts of an app. Rudy has gone and updated version of TVShow brings those features and more to the table. If you update look forward to:

Lockscreen support
Voice commands
New Live Tiles
Better performance

If you aren’t familiar with TVShow do yourself a favor and at least download the trial for a test drive. If you’re a TV show junkie it’s a great way to stay up to date on the season of your favorite show. You can get a quick overview for upcoming episodes, rate episodes, mark seen and unseen episodes, get notifications for when an episode is about to air, and much, much more.

The Live Tile is handy because it will display the number of unseen episodes and the list of TV shows for the day. That’s just super awesome, I want to see your iPhone do that, but guess what? It can’t. The lockscreen support is really nice too. It will cycle through images from your list of shows. Nothing puts a smile on our face faster than seeing Charlie, Sweet Dee, Mac and Dennis when we wake the phone up.

If everything you’ve read so far has piqued your interest in TVShows and you’re keen to download, keep reading. Head on over here to the Windows Phone Store for it, use the QR codes below, or swipe to the right in our Windows Phone app to download directly.

The app is free with ads, or you can pony up $0.99 to remove those ads. It’s also worth noting that the links above to this version of the app are for Windows Phone 8 only. Users running older version of Windows Phone will want to see the rest of the apps by the developer to nab theirs.
